Item # 2476088

Anthony van Dyck

Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641), in full Sir Anthony van Dyck, was one of the most prominent Flemish Baroque painters of the 17th century. A prolific painter of portraits of European aristocracy, he also executed many works on religious and mythological subjects and was a fine draftsman and etcher.

The infant Jesus responds with playful enthusiasm to an adoring Saint Catherine, a former princess identified by pearls and a martyrs palm. She was esteemed as an intercessor for young women because of her mystical marriage to Christ. The pictures warm humanity and elegantly rhythmic composition reflect Van Dycks great admiration for Titian, Veronese, and other North Italian artists during his years in Italy (1621-27).
