Neutrino detector

Item # 1154370

Volker Steger

Neutrino detector. Interior of the Borexino neutrino detector. Neutrinos are elementary particles produced by nuclear reactions in stars and in supernova explosions. The stainless steel sphere contains 2200 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) that detect the flash of light when a neutrino hits the liquid core of the detector (not seen). The aim of the Borexino detector is to measure neutrino flux from the Sun. Photographed at the Gran Sasso Laboratories, Abruzzo, Italy. The laboratories are located 1400 metres underground and are accessed from a 10 kilometre long road tunnel. The rock overlay shields the laboratories from cosmic rays.
