Ground beetle head, SEM

Item # 1145660

Steve Gschmeissner

Ground beetle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a ground beetle (family Carabidae). The beetle's large jaws (mandibles) can be seen at upper right (blue). Most ground beetles are fast-running predators which are active at night. The large jaws are used for catching and eating other invertebrates. They are named ground beetles as they spend most of their time on or under the ground. Magnification x10 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
