Colon cancer cell, SEM

Item # 1153421

Steve Gschmeissner

Colon cancer. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cancer cell from the human colon (large intestine). Colon cancer (carcinoma) arises in the cells lining the large intestine. A cancer cell is typically large, with this rough surface due to abnormal cytoplasmic projections. Cancer cells proliferate in chaotic and abnormal uncontrolled growth. Clumps of cancer cells may form malignant tumours that can invade and destroy surrounding tissues. Cancer of the colon is one of the most common cancers, especially in the developed world. Treatment often involves surgery and chemotherapy. Magnification: x5000 at 6x7cm size.
