Cliffs at Deir el Bahri, Egypt

Item # 2467241

John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. Sargent's work is characterized by remarkable technical facility, particularly in his ability to draw with a brush.

This unfinished landscape is believed to represent the cliffs at Deir el Bahri, near Thebes, Egypt. Its identification is based on the individuality of the rock formations and crown of the cliffs. The work most likely dates from Sargent's trip to Egypt in 1890-91.
