Item # 2583765

Carina Nebula pillar. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of a three-light-year-long pillar of gas and dust within the Carina Nebula. The pillar is sculpted by radiation and streams of charged particles from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. In the pillar itself new stars are forming. The Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) is a starbirth region about 7500 light years from Earth in the constellation of Carina. Image obtained by the UVIS (ultraviolet and visible) sensor on Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). Image published on 9 September 2009, as part of the Hubble Servicing Mission 4 Early Release Observations (SM4 ERO).
