<p>Polarised light micrograph of asparagine. Asparagine is a polar amino acid which, as its name suggests, was isolated from asparagus juice. In 1806 it was the first amino acid to be isolated. It is a nonessential amino acid, (can be synthesized by humans and so is not required in the diet). It is one of the 20 most common amino acids. Magnification: x28 at 10cm wide.</p>
