293T Cells In Culture, SEM

Item # 2583854

Steve Gschmeissner

293T cells in culture, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These cells were isolated from human embryonic kidneys in 1977 and have been growing in culture ever since. 293T cells have lost the capacity to defend themselves from viral infection, a capability in which all cells normally excel. 293T express several viral proteins that switch cellular defences off allowing researchers to introduce DNA into them and to use the cells to make large amounts of protein, or even infectious viruses. This makes these cells an extraordinarily valuable tool in medicine and research. People performing gene therapy use 293T to make very high doses of virus containing therapeutic genes and these are the only cells that can do this. Magnification x 3000 when printed at 10cm wide. Specimen courtesy of Greg Towers, UCL.
