Semicircular canal, diagram

Item # 1411239

Francis Leroy

Semicircular canal. Diagram of the anatomical structure of the semicircular duct or canal, a structure in the inner ear that help detect head movements. The canals (the loops at right) are aligned at right-angles (orthogonally), allowing movement to be sensed in all three planes: up and down, sideways, and forward and backward. At left are smaller, rounded structures: the ampulla (top) and the vestibule (bottom).
