Pumping engines, 19th century

<p>Engraved plate showing diagrams of various pumping engines. These are steam engines designed to pump water from deep underground in mines. At top left is the engine designed by Thomas Savery in 1698 known as the 'Miners Friend'. At bottom left is an engine designed by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. At top right is an engine designed by James Watt developed between 1763 and 1775. This plate was published in George Gregory's A Dictionary of the Arts and Sciences, printed at London in 1807.</p>
