Gustave Dore

Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was a French artist and illustrator who specialized in wood engraving and printmaking. Doré created illustrations for hundreds of books, including art images depicting The Divine Comedy and stories from the Bible. He was a prolific artist who worked on illustrators for Shakespearean plays and who also experimented with painting and sculpture. Some of Doré’s art is in color, while other pieces are stunning in black and white. Yet every piece tells a complex story with an incredible amount of detail and intention in every scene.
