Pale blue areas are groups of hot, young stars. Planetary nebulae are purple ellipses. The Gum Nebula (pink ring, centre right) is a huge bubble (800 light years across) inflated by a succession of supernova explosions. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the location of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects.</p>
