Early naturalist collecting guide books

Item # 1410766

Paul Stewart

Two books on collecting natural history specimens (particularly insects) published at the end of the 18th century. They would have influenced the famous specimen collectors of the early 18th century such as Darwin, Wallace and Bates. Left above is \A Naturalist's and Traveller's Companion\ by John Coakley Lettsom (1799 third edition) and right (open) is \Instructions for Collecting and Preserving various subjects of Natural History\ by E. Donovan (1794). Donovan's work also gives instruction for how to keep insects in captivity to rear the adult from larvae collected. Shown around them are various specimens and collectors apparatus suitable to the period.
