Boring a hole

Item # 1411664

Sheila Terry

Boring a hole. Historical artwork of workers using a steam-powered boring device to dig a deep hole. One worker is turning the shaft between each stroke so that the cutting device hits all parts of the rock face. Such devices were often used to find coal seams for subsequent mining. The bottom of the bore-hole is kept filled with water so that the debris removed by the percussion of the chisel can be lifted by a pump. Taken from Mines and Miners, L. Simonin, 1868.
