Artwork of structures within a human nerve

Item # 1154134

Francis Leroy

Nerve. Cutaway artwork of the contents of a human nerve. Many axons nerve fibres (elongated, yellow and hollow) make up the nerve. These axons are enclosed in folds of the membranes of Schwann cells. These Schwann cell membranes wrap repeatedly around each axon in a spiral forming a myelin sheath. This sheath helps to transmit nerve impulses more efficiently. The red and yellow structures inside the axons are neurofilaments and microtubules. Filaments of collagen (enlarged at lower centre) provide structural support. Outside the nerve are blood vessels (red and blue). A nerve relays information through the body.
