Those traveling into the New York Harbor are welcomed by one of America's most symbolic landmark's -- The Statue of Liberty. Located on the 12-acres of Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from France and celebrates the 100-year signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The Statue of Liberty is 305-feet tall. The total weight of copper within the statue is 62,000 pounds, of steel is 250,000 and of the concrete foundation is 54 million pounds. There are 25 windows in the crown, symbolizing the natural minerals found on the earth. The seven rays of the crown symbolize the world's seven seas and continents, the torch represents enlightenment, and the chains underfoot represent Lady Liberty crushing the chains of slavery
Throughout the years, the Statue has become a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Written on base of the Statue is the famous New Colossus, written by Emma Lazarus.
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breath free; The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, Tempest-tossed to me I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
