Low angle view of buildings, Sears Tower, Chicago, Illinois, USA
The impressive Sears Tower! In 1973 when the last 2,500-pound girder was set into place atop Chicago's Sears Tower, the electrical workers burst into song: "She towers so high; just scraping the sky; she's the Tallest Rock!" Since then, millions have come to pay homage to this distinguished Chicago landmark, the skyscraper that is the apple of Chicago's eye! Counting its antennae, it was the world's tallest building until 2007 when Taiwan's Taipei 101 surpassed it.
With a floor space of 4.5 million feet and consisting of 76,000 tons of steel, the Sears Tower stretches to a roof height of 1,451 feet (108 stories). However, when the antennas were added in 1982 to improve NBC's reception, it increased its height 1,705 feet. It was designed by chief architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Khan for the Sears, Roebuck Company, the world's largest retailer at the time. The cost of construction was $150 million.
The Sears Tower Skydeck is on the 103 floor of the giant structure. There are 1.3 million tourists who visit this exciting vista annually to enjoy sweeping views that extend into Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin on a clear day.
