Located in Keystone, South Dakota, some say that Mt. Rushmore is the greatest admission free landmark in the United States and should not be missed.
Gutzon Borglum began the actual carving of Mt. Rushmore in 1927 and took 14 years to complete. This 60-foot sculpture covers 1,278 acres and represents the first 150 years of United States history. Four presidents encompass the monument, each bringing a bit of their own history to the monument. George Washington stands for the people's struggle for independence, while Thomas Jefferson represents the people's idea of government. Abraham Lincoln symbolizes equality and the permanent union of the states, and Theodore Roosevelt stands for the Unites State's role in 20th century world affairs.
Over two million people visit Mt. Rushmore each year. Not heading to South Dakota anytime soon? No problem. Great Big Canvas has spectacular gallery wrapped prints of this monumental granite landmark perfect for any home or office.
