D.C. is a city of national monuments and inspiring memorials to the events and people who shaped our nation. The National Mall is home to the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, WWII Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Our Capitol City, named for George Washington, is bordered by the states of Maryland and Virginia and has three waterways-the Potomac River and two of its tributaries, the Anacostia River and Rock Creek.
Modeled in the Baroque style, the plan for the city was drawn up in 1791, allowing much open space to accommodate landscaping, monuments, and parks. In 1900 a major beautification effort was launched. Architects and planners continued to build on the original plan, constructing new Federal buildings, more monuments, and developing a citywide park system.
Many architectural styles are on the skyline, from neoclassical and Georgian to gothic and modern. And some of the most prestigious buildings in America are located within its boundaries, including the White House and the Washington National Cathedral.
